CPAP

Continuous positive airway pressure applied throughout the respiratory cycle to the spontaneously breathing patient
  • Requirements:
    • Requires reliable ventilatory drive
    • Adequate tidal volume (VT)
    • Pt. performs all the WOB
  • Indications:
    • Adequate ventilation but poor oxygenation r/t atelectesis or heavy secretions
    • Adequate ventilation but artificial airway needed because of airway edema or obstruction
    • Weaning mode
  • Contraindications:
    • Diminished sensorium
    • Secretions
